Priyanka Chopra is an actress

The joke ain't on Priyanka Chopra winning the best actress award for 2009, the joke's putting her in the company of greats like Mohanlal and Mammooty. And the latter's what the best actress award's done. Bollywood, in fact, has swept the 56th National awards. My take? Bollywood and acting is akin to saying Barack understands what's it like to run a business.

When such asinine announcements are made, its the awards that lose credibility. I know its happened before, and so it was bound to happen again.

But then again fathom the response if this were to happen in the business and consumer world. Imagine if the JD Power surveys put the rickety HM Ambassador in company with Suzuki SX4? Bet JD Power then can kiss itself goodbye. I know the national awards will carry on, asinine acts and all. After all when the government's got to do with something, its never really any good.

Isn't it?

I think last statement made is too generic about the govt. Any act which is not made after proper decision making process will fall into the category of asinine act! It may be driven by favoritism / biased thought or may be some ill interest!

Deepali,

The Govt's designed to be ineffecient...Guess whose money is it that they manage...certainly not theirs. And so where's the necessity to be effecient?

Note Michael Medved talking about (When It Comes to Rewarding Inefficiency, Washington Puts Wall Street to Shame) Federal Bureaucracy in America,

'Unlike private firms, the federal bureaucracy doesn’t attempt to make a profit, so there’s never a pressing drive to cut costs or to trim payroll; unlike state and local governments, Washington doesn’t even need to break even. The ability of the central government to print or borrow money means that all the new hires will remain at their posts, no matter how mediocre or inadequate their performance, or how questionable the value of the often meaningless tasks they perform...'

sir,
i would beg to differ a little here as national awards are given on a specific calendar year's performances ,so if new actress has done extremely well ,a national award doesn't necessarily mean she has been promoted to the the elite group of actors mentioned here, i felt her performances in FASHION which reflects the true story of rapidly westernizing India well deserves a national award..........but i did not get a chance to see nominee actresses work ...but i still feel a young w omen's extraordinary......performance should not be blatantly dismissed........i follow your blog a lot and its amazing........

in a country where poverty ,unemployment, floods ,coalition ,arson and riots are major problems is it really necessary for government to worry too much about national awards.it doesn't loose them elections (that's the attitude) even if they can be good at deciding national awards or anything of artistic approach.where as JD power survey showing faults clearly shows inefficiency in the most critical function they do.........a very contextual situation ......

Anky,

Thank you for comments...glad you liked the blog.

About Priyanka being a deserved candidate, I still have my reservations...about the blatant dismissal...I agree, I can be more careful.
